Flier Project
Dr. Linda M. Perry

OBJECTIVE: To justify and produce a flier, with at least one illustration, using the design principles covered in lecture. The flier must be designed to meet at least one communication objective for your client. It must have at least two ink colors and may have up to four ink colors as long as they are CMYK.

The visualization of the flier must be produced within the confines of lab, on a deadline, but you may prepare supporting materials, such as the justification (creative brief), beforehand.

JUSTIFICATION: Write a one-paragraph justification— or creative brief — for your client. Explain why the flier is needed.

  • Identify the problem (or opportunity) it is designed to solve (or meet) and explain
why a flier is the best option
among the media available for solving that problem.
  • Identify the audience it is intended to reach.
  • State the purpose of the flier clearly and set (an) objective(s) for it, including at least one behavioral objective. State the action or behavior-change it is intended to produce within a specified time period. Remember that objectives must be specific, realistic and measurable.
  • Explain how you would measure whether the flier met its stated objectives.
  • Finally, explain how the flier would be distributed, or how it will reach the target audience.

The justification may be prepared before coming to the lab in which the flier is due.

VISUAL: The visual, or prototype, of the flier must be preapred in InDesign IN LAB on a deadline. It is due at the end of the lab. It should have at least two colors, at least one piece of art (besides type as art), and text written to acheive the stated objectives. The visual may be sketched, or designed, before your lab. Only the InDesign rendering must be done on deadline, in lab. If you want a bleed on your flier, you may color to the edge of the paper with color pencils or felt pens to simulate the bleed, or you may trim the paper (as the lab printer has default margins).

The art may be prepared before lab in Photoshop. It may be scanned in, captured from a digital photograph, downloaded from the web, or may be computer clip art. It should not be distorted from poor scaling or pixelated from enlarging. It should be rendered as a TIFF in CMYK mode with a resolution of at least 180 dpi.

TIP: You'll have more time to work with InDesign and perfect your flier if you complete the justification and prepare the art in Photoshop before lab. DO NOT prepare the entire flier in Photoshop. It must be produced in InDesign.

Write the copy to achieve the objectives specified in the justification. The copy may be written befrore lab, but must be placed or typed in InDesign on deadline, in lab.

The flier will be produced during your lab meeting in the week specified in the syllabus. You may sketch out your design before lab, but the entire flier that you produce with InDesign and turn in for your grade must be produced on deadline in lab. Submit a printout of the flier at the end of lab and upload a copy of the InDesign document to the IVLE workbin.
