> Steps for Layout on InDesign I: TYPE & Color
This exercise will
get you familiar with how to create type in InDesign in various colors,
fonts, sizes and styles as well as how to place copy from a Microsoft
Word document. It's also a start on your newsletter project.
- From the IVLE
workbin, copy the contents of the Newsletter Exercise folder
to your student directory. Make sure you have three stories for editing
and three pieces of art.
- Open the InDesign
application. Choose Create New > Document. (Once the document
has been created, you can double click on the InDesign document icon
to open it.) In the New Document setup box, designate
Number of Pages at 2, not facing (click to uncheck
Facing Pages if checked); Page Size > A4;
page Orientation, tall (upright orientation;
Number of Columns, 3; and Gutter,
1p0. (If the units are not set in picas, Click OK and select
Edit > Preferences > Units & Increments. Under Ruler
Units, change both Horizontal and Vertical to Picas.
Point/Pica Size should be at PostScript (72 pts/inch).
Origin should be on Spread.) Inside the Margins field
of the Document Setup box (or if you had to leave the initial set
up box to change increments, in Layout > Margins and Columns),
make sure the link icon appears linked. Set Margins
at 4p6. Then click on the linked icon so it appears broken. Change
the Top margin to 3.0. Click OK. Note that page,
column and gutter size can be adjusted under Layout > Margins
and Columns. Save, using your last name plus news
(such as perrynews) as the title.
- You can adjust
the columns to custom widths by dragging the column guides.
The left column on page one is narrower than the other two columns,
which roughly halve the remaining space. To use InDesign's handy ruler
to do this, reset the 0 on the ruler by dragging the cross hairs in
the upper left corner to move 0 from the edges of the page
to the left and top margins (see illustration below). Zoom in for
precision. When aligned, click OK.
