Website Project
Dr. Linda M. Perry

Your final Web project will include a justification to management, a plan for a five-page Web site for your client, and a home page with a working link to one other Web page, such as the background portion of your research project. (You'll plan five pages, but execute only two.)

Submit the justification on paper by the end of lab during the week listed in the schedule.
It is turned in earlier than the actual website.

In a large envelope, submit your website project on a thumb drive, disk, or some kind of portable storage device (to be returned), along with a printout of the web pages, by the time and date listed in your syllabus. (You may put the website project in the same large envelope as the folder project.) All elements (i.e. web pages and art) in the website are to be placed within one folder, or directory, with a logical title.

The project requirements are outlined below:

The Justification — (1) Justify the investment (actual cost in dollars not necessary) and commitment that it would take to set up and maintain the website (or subwebsite, or revamp of an existing one). The justification should be about one page, typed and double-spaced. Using the web critique you wrote earlier, explain why your organization needs a website, or a redesigned website, of at least five Web pages. Name at least two objectives the website is intended to achieve. Be sure the objectives are specific, realistic, measurable, and obtainable within a specified time period.
(2) Outline the content briefly for five pages. (3) Using The Non-Designer's Web Book (pages 81-84 and Chapter 7 in the 2nd edition, and pages 88-89 and Chapter 7 in the 3rd edition) as a guide, include a diagram, schematic or visual map of the five-page Website and how the pages relate, or link. (4) Also include a sketch and (5) colour-coded table plan (both may be drawn by hand) for the home page. Do not staple the table plan to the justification, as it will be returned immediately to you at the end of the lab in which it is due.

  • The justification must include:
    • Statement justifying the investment in the Website.
      • Two measurable objectives.
    • Brief outline of content for five pages.
    • Diagram of five-page Website, showing how pages link.
    • Sketch of home page design.
    • A table plan for the home page (not stapled, for immediate return).

The Website — Produce two Web pages: a home page and one other with information, such as the background of your organization (may be taken from your research report) for an About Us page.

The Home Page Produced by hand-HTML coding or with Web-authoring software such as Dremaweaver, the home page should follow the guidelines and design principles outlined in chapters 6-7 of The Non-Designer's Web Book.

  • The Home Page must include:
    • At least one graphic—jpeg or gif as appropriate—rendered correctly in Photoshop (mode, image size [ppi])
    • An appropriate, working mailto link.
    • A navigation bar, with graphic buttons or text links, with at least one working link (to the second Web page).
    • At least one word in color type logically placed (other than a hyperlink). It may be a graphic.

The Second Page — Coding by hand or formatting with Web-authoring software, create a second page. You may use the edited and corrected background article from your research project for this page. This second page should be visually related to the home page.

  • The second page must include at least the following:
    • A headline or title, following the appropriate format for your piece.
    • At least four external links (absolute addressing) relative to your client.
    • A link at the bottom back to the top (so the page must be long enough for the link to be functional).
    • A byline that is a working mailto link to your email address.
    • At least one word of the body copy (in addition to headings) in bold type, logically placed.
    • At least one word in italics logically placed.
    • A link back to the home page (it may be a graphic and may be in a nav bar).

The final Web project will be graded on
